Food and coffee offer a different way to get to know a place. Around Arusha and northern Tanzania, local experiences can take you beyond simply sitting down for a meal — into the farms, villages and kitchens where ingredients are grown, prepared and shared.

A traditional coffee experience takes you through the journey from bean to cup. You can learn how coffee is grown, roasted and prepared by hand, often becoming part of the process yourself. There is conversation, laughter, sometimes singing — and, of course, the reward at the end: a freshly prepared cup of Tanzanian coffee.

A local food experience often starts at the market — choosing fresh vegetables, spices and produce for the meal you will prepare together. From there, it moves into a local kitchen, where you cook alongside the people who live there rather than simply watching them. You'll learn the small techniques passed down rather than written down — how a sauce is balanced, how ugali is worked to the right texture — before sitting down together to eat what you made.
